Kasturba Sevikashram Gandhigram

Kasturba Sevikashram

Origin:

In an ever challenging and changing society, empowerment of women has been a matter of great concern.  To equip socially disabled women to meet the challenges of the society “Kasthurba Sevikashram was started by Dr. T.S.Soundram as an essential unit of Gandhigram in 1947.  The “Ashram” has been a “Home” for the socially disabled women – the destitutes, divorces, young widows and girls from remote villages and hilly areas where there is no opportunity for formal education beyond primary school level.

Location:

Kasthurba Sevikashram a unit of Gandhigram is situated in a beautiful valley between Sirumalai Hills on the east and Kodai Hills on the west and is just 10 K.M. from Dindigul and 53 K.M. from Madurai.

Vision:

Enabling woman with social disability to stand on their own legs by giving them education and skills is the primary goal.  No woman should feel helpless and orphaned.  Giving protection to widows, destitutes and divorces and socially handicapped girls and also help them get a respectable position in the society, is our vision.

Education:

The School offers general education from Std VI to Std XII to women students of above 16 years and below 30 years. They appear S.S.L.C. and +2 public examination conducted by Government of Tamil Nadu. Due to compulsions and pressures from women of remote villages and hilly areas, admitting school drop-outs below 16 years also, under a non-stipendary scheme, charging a very nominal fee has become inevitable. Rehabilitation being the main objective, the students is encouraged to pursue higher studies and are even arranged placement in a field of their choice based on the marks they secure and interest.

Teachers:

There are 5 Teachers including a Headmistress and one Non-teaching staff. They are paid by the Department of Social Welfare, Government of TamilNadu.

Grant:

Kasthurba Sevikashram Special Higher Secondary School was recognized by the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu in 1977 and was upgraded 2007 August.  Since 2010 July students receive a stipend of Rs. 450/- per month from State Social Welfare Department, Government of Tamil Nadu.

Strength:

The sanctioned strength of the school by Social Welfare Department is 120, under stipendiary scheme. Besides this the drop out girls below 16 years are also admitted, under non stipendiary scheme.

Result:

Though these women continue their formal education after a break of even 10 years their pass percentage has always been above 85% in the final examination.

Skill Training:

Besides formal school education students are given training in handwork, tailoring typewriting and computer.

Extra – Curricular Activities:

At Kasthurba Sevikashram Special High School, we have Junior Red cross, Scouts & Guide, Consumer Club, and Parent Teacher Association.  These units are actively involved in various activities, including under taking extension activities in villages.

The message sent by Mahatma Gandhiji at the inauguration of Gandhigram  in1947 “Success Attends where Truth Reigns” has rung true to this day. Today, we feel proud to state that the Sevikashram has rehabilitated more than 2300 socially disabled women to contribute their might to the welfare of the society by offering their services under various categories as follows:
