The Gandhigram Trust
manages the health, education and welfare activities directly. The livelihood
opportunities relating to the cottage industries, are managed as part
of the Khadi and Village Industries Public Charitable Trust and
some of the larger initiatives, particularly health and medicine, that
were not in the list of approved industries of KVIC are managed through the Lakshmi
Seva Sangh.
Some of the major institutions that are part of the Gandhigram Trust fold:
Sowbhagya Illam - a home for all foundlings who are brought here
between the age of 3 and 18.
Avvai Ashram - A home for destitute boys and girls. It has two
crèches in the villages.
Shanthi School - A special residential school for the deaf and
dumb children.
Kasturba Sevikashram - A special institution with high school facility
for widows, deserted wives and young girls in indigent circumstances.
Vocational Training - As part of many of the above initiatives
and institutions
Crèches - 14 crèches in Dindigul and Tirunelveli
district for village children are taken care of
Dr. T.S. Soundram Vidyalaya - an English medium school from lower
primary to class 5
Gandhigram Primary School - a Tamil medium school from 1st to 5th
standards
Thambithottam higher secondary school - a state board co-education
school from class 6 to 12
Lakshmi college of education - teachers training college that offers
B. Ed., course of Madurai Kamaraj University
Centre for documentation, research and training on Natural Dyes - this centre furthers
research on different village based industries and production, documents
such research for dissemination across the country and trains village
people in skills and competencies for managing such industries.
Natural Dye unit - A pioneer in research and development of natural
dye applications for textile, leather, paper and other products, this
functions as part of the centre for documentation, research and training.
Lakshmi Seva Sangam Ayurvedic and Siddha medicine production centre
- This centre today produces traditional ayurvedic and Siddha Medicine
Kasturba Hospital - a 260 bed medical facility which provides the
local community with medical services at affordable costs
Artificial Limb Research Centre - this centre has adapted and enhanced
the Jaipur foot technology to produce low cost foot pieces
that are made available at affordable cost to rural communities
Soundram Hospital - based in Kasipalayam, this hospital is a branch
of Kasturba hospital
Village extension programme - the village intervention and extension
programme consist of formation of women's self-help groups in villages,
provide them with micro-credit and micro-enterprise opportunities and
integrating them into the khadi and village industries production fold
Agricultural Extension - the agricultural extension and watershed
based development programme looks at promoting nature friendly agricultural
practices and watershed based development projects
Sales outlets for the Khadi village industrial products - the trust
also manages and monitors sales outlets for the village industries products.
Rural Technologies - Gandhigram Trust is a recognised centre for
technology research and development for rural implementation.
Each of these divisions of the Trust have dedicated and trained staff
who are oriented to the ideology of the institution. They
