Herbal Garden
The agricultural extension work of the Gandhigram Trust is managed by a staff of 5 well qualified professionals. They implement village extension activities related to sustainable agriculture, medicinal plants and watershed. They are maintaining an experimental farm (total extent of 25 acres) and a demo garden in the Gandhigram campus for medicinal plants.

Traditional water body

Some of the projects undertaken by this group are as follows:

Field Demonstration and Dissemination of composting technologies for small farmers and SHG - supported by CAPART, Hyderabad, this project was undertaken in10 villages covering 100 farmers and 11 SHGs.
Medicinal Plants Nursery - In the recent past, the demand for medicinal plants has increased in a big way. A nursery has been established for medicinal plants wherein the plants of high demand and endangered plants are propagated. About 27 such plants have been planted for propagation. A sophisticated mist chamber has also been set-up.

Training on medicinal plants - the agricultural extension group also provides training on medicinal plants and their uses and developing a herbal kitchen garden to Village Health Nurse and SHGs. About 600 VHNs have been trained.

Extension Centre for Bio-manure
- Khadi and village Industries Commission (KVIC), Mumbai has recognised Gandhigram Trust as one of their extension centres for bio-manure since 2002. Awareness and entrepreneurship development programmes are conducted for farmers, SHGs and NGOs.

Watershed Development - Gandhigram Trust has taken up a watershed development project in four villages covering 35 hamlets, with a population of 17,000 (Approximately). The physical target of this project is to cover 5 micro watersheds in an area of 2369 hectares.

The proposal envisages six dimensions of development to make it comprehensive. They are:
(i) Water and sanitation, (ii) Rural Health, (iii) Rural Education, (iv) Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, (v) Medicinal Plants cultivation, and (vi) Income Generation Programmes.

The Project aims at, in addition to creating physical structures needed for water conservation, educating the man to conserve water and vegetation so as to maximize the social benefit to all sections of the population. This three year project, funded under Rastriya Sam Vikas Yojana (RSVY) of Union Planning Commission, commenced operations in June 2004.

Aromatic Plants Project - The Gandhigram Trust has just commenced implementing a new project titled " Aromatic Plants Project" This two year project is supported by the Department of Science and Technology New Delhi. The project aims at generating income for small and marginal farmers and SHGs through introduction of aromatic crops and value addition. Aromatic oil extraction from crops such as palmarosa, vettiver, and lemongrass are taken up under this project.
