Strength building in rural
communities through rural enterprises has been one of the prime endeavours
of Gandhigram Trust since inception. In order to fulfil this purpose GT
from the beginning has been concentrating on establishing and promoting
various income generation programmes. Hence, today Gandhigram has become
an assembly of several small-scale industries and technologies. SHGs that
aim at establishing micro enterprises.

Individual entrepreneurs
from all over Tamilnadu pay visit to Gandhigram, study the functioning
of various Units and draw lessons and inspiration. Demand based training
programmes are one of the important areas of activity of Gandhigram Trust.
There are several short duration training programmes conducted on request
from the Departments / agencies of the Government, NGOs and others interested.
Hence, undertaking training programmes is one of the continuous activities
of the Trust.
Training Facilities Moderate Training Facilities are available at Gandhigram. Two training halls are available - with a seating capacity of 25 and 50 respectively. There is a trainees' hostel exclusively meant for accommodating participants of various programmes, which can accommodate 25 participants. Dormitory facilities are also available for women. Besides this, there are a few guesthouses. There is a canteen managed by a Self-Help Group within the campus, which provides homely food at moderate prices. For use during training programmes there are training aids such as White Boards, Black Boards, Over Head Projectors, microphone systems, etc. Training Personnel Resource Persons are available for providing training on each of the village industries Gandhigram is involved in. Rich experience gained in production processes, technology, methods and marketing over decades has become a large repository of village industries knowledge. Some of the staff have undergone trainer's training through the government and international agencies. Functioning production units serve as on-the-job training facility. Duration & Cost Duration - could be Basic Course or Intensive Course; 'Basic training' is imparting only the fundamentals of a industry in a very short period. 'Intensive training' imparts the intricacies of the industry and trains the participant to master the different aspects of the production and also acquire hands on experience. Fee for Non-Residential training programmes includes cost of materials required for practice, training fees, lunch & tea expenses. Fee for Residential training programmes include food (breakfast, lunch, dinner) accommodation, cost of materials required for practice, training fees, and other incidental expenses. Training Modules The following training modules are available as individual modules, organisations, individuals and institutions are open to choose to request for either one of these programmes are a group of programme suitable for their needs.
Training Contact: Mrs. Srirangam, Central Office, 0451-24542326 Resource Centre for Rural Technologies (RCRT): This 3 year project funded by CAPART aims to reach out to the disadvantages sections of rural society by orienting them for technological introduction / up-gradation. The Technology Resource Centre (TRC) is viewed as an active instrument of change, equipped to innovate and create, capable of initiating and sustaining rural technology programmes of demonstratable and lasting effects. The components of RCRT project are: Brass vessel making, pottery, rural workshop, neem oil extraction, medicinal plant nursery, documentation and construction of a training hostel. Centre for Documentation, Research and Training on Natural Dyes: This centre operates with the financial assistance of the Dept. of Science & Technology, Government of India. It started functioning in October 2001. The Centre has trained 85 rural girls/ women as either experts or entrepreneurs in natural dye making. Shade card 2003, consisting of 130 shades has been released. Introduction of mordant-free Natural Dyeing is a break through in this technology, where there is no room for chemicals / solvents or any synthetic material at any stage of processing Eco-bleach methods has been standardized. Monographs prepared on 50 dye yielding Plants. Nearly 250 dye plants both under conventional practice and newly identified have been documented. |
