Mrs. Rajam: "The condition of women in society today is very bad. Each one is in a peculiar situation of her own. We have to take responsibility for doing something about this. and the current situation today is all the women who are here want some professional training and only do some proper work in the city. If we were to think of others who might be in need of help…"

Kasturba Sevikashram
Established in 1947 with 4 students in the school for 'socially handicapped' (drop outs, deserted and / or divorced wives etc) women with the help of a Grant from the Social Welfare Department. Then, students (in the age group of 18 - 35 years) wrote a private exam at the end of their period in sevikashram.

In 1977, Sevikashram changed to Sevikashram Special High School, and now the age group is between 16 - 30 years. In 1979, 6th to 8th standards were transferred here from Sivasailam. Currently, there is a staff strength of 6 people and total of 98 students (6th, 7th and 8th Stds - 25 students and 9th and 10th each 36). There is no set age limit for each class. This is decided by the Transfer Certificate that they hold at the time of admission into sevikashram. In the situation that a girl has never attended school, she is given special coaching and then allowed to join a class corresponding to her level of understanding.

The school is partly supported by grants from the Welfare Department.

The girls are also given vocational training like tailoring, typewriting, secretarial and house-keeping courses. Until date 2300 girls have gone out of the Sevikashram. Several of them are well-placed as teachers, vocational trainers, tailoring instructors, khadi workers, staff nurses, typists, and so on. One is a Doctor now at Kasturba Hospital.

The atmosphere is homely, and they function as a large family. Teachers take on the role of friends rather than an instructive or parental one. There are 5 blocks with 5 rooms each. One teacher is in charge for one block.
